Basil: A Nutritional Powerhouse that Loves the Florida Heat

ree

Did you know that basil loves our scorching Florida summers, makes a delicious pesto, and has been studied for its antidepressant properties? For me, it’s one of the most powerful foods in my diet for regulating my mood! I like to make pesto with it, add it to lemon water, and even munch on it raw when I’m out in the garden.

Prospera basil from Johnny's Selected Seeds is a fantastic variety to grow as it extremely disease resistant. I grow my Prospera basil starting in late spring, and as long as I protect it from freezes, the same plant will grow well into next spring. At some point, the stem will get thick and woody. It’s then that I remove it and start a new plant.

Prospera Basil is resistant to Downy MIldew and Fusarium Wilt

Other disease resistant varieties include lime basil, lemon basil, holy basil, and Thai basil. While they don’t necessarily make the best pesto, they are fantastic in other dishes.

Grow it on a Tower Garden!

Basil grows amazingly well in both the outdoor Tower Garden Flex and the indoor Tower Garden Home.

Try my pesto recipe! To make it extra special, add some lemon sorrel. You'll love it!
